Paramaribo Perspectives

Roberto Tjon A Meeuw, Sri Irodikromo, 2010

In Rotterdam’s Wijkpark Oude Westen, Surinamese contemporary art took center stage with the exhibition Paramaribo Perspectives. Two works formed the heart of the show. Ingiwinti by Sri Irodikromo featured a large 3-by-6-meter batik cloth, “embroidered” with dried lianas and roots from the rainforest. The second work, Fatu Bangi by Roberto Tjon A Meeuw, consisted of monumental benches made from reclaimed wood. Together, these works bridged urban Rotterdam with the tropical and cultural heritage of Suriname.

The exhibition was commissioned by TENT. Rotterdam, with Mothership responsible for project management.
