No more heroes anymore
During the Wereld van de Witte de With festival in 2007, Studio VollaersZwart presented the work No More Heroes Anymore. In line with the festival’s overarching theme, Heroes, the artist duo created a citywide intervention featuring quotes and one-liners from famous heroes, idols, and celebrities displayed on façades, windows, and even on people themselves.
Through these interventions, Studio VollaersZwart subjected the concept of heroism to a critical and visually stimulating analysis. The texts functioned as reflective statements, confronting viewers with the shifting status of heroes in contemporary culture — from admired to condemned, from role model to marketing product.
The work moved throughout the city, appearing everywhere — from monumental to subtle — and in doing so, created a temporary layer within the urban landscape. The public space became a canvas for a collective reconsideration of what it means to be a hero.
Mothership acted as curator and project manager for this project, which was carried out in collaboration with September in Rotterdam (Rotterdam Festivals).
