Kantelen

Maze de Boer, 2017

The artwork Kantelen by Maze de Boer plays with the imagination surrounding the battlements of the vanished Castle Grouwaart and the shadows cast by nearby houses onto the grass. Mothership was responsible for the execution and coordination of the project.

Located on the André Voltenlaan in Utrecht — an area that will eventually grow into the new district of Leidsche Rijn — the artwork sits amid modern, sleek architecture and a green, open landscape with grass, trees, tables, and chairs.
The piece references the historic silhouettes of the former houses and castle, offering a playful reinterpretation of traditional stepped and bell gables. The use of terrazzo in a geometric design recalls the style of André Volten, while also incorporating elements characteristic of Maze de Boer’s work.
The artwork invites visitors to trace its shapes, or simply enjoy the sunlight while sitting or lying on it.
