Guard
At the edge of the skate park on Westblaak, in the heart of Rotterdam, stands Guard: a three-meter-tall ceramic Gundam robot mounted on a chunk of comet stone. This imposing, futuristic sculpture by artist Hans van Bentem clearly references science fiction icons such as Gundam and Transformers.
Guard was realized on the initiative of CBK Rotterdam, supported by a petition from the skate community. As such, the work is not only a piece of public art but also the result of a unique collaboration between a city art institution and the young urban community that inhabits the space.
The sculpture serves as a symbolic guardian of the skate park. With its powerful stance and imaginative presence, Guard embodies protection, freedom, and creativity — values that perfectly resonate with the energy of the skate scene.
De opdracht werd verstrekt door BKOR (Centrum Beeldende Kunst Rotterdam).
Mothership verzorgde het projectmanagement en de consultancy, met inhoudelijke advisering van Jeroen Everaert en Boris van Berkum (MAMA).
