Glück Auf

Arno Coenen, 2011

For the Cornelius Park in Heerlerheide, artist Arno Coenen designed an impressive mosaic artwork covering no less than 150 square meters — and at 60 meters in length, it is the largest mosaic in the Netherlands. The work, titled Glück Auf, is a colorful tribute to the region, filled with references to the history and identity of Heerlerheide and the province of Limburg.

Together with landscape architect Enrico Cramer, a gently sloping park landscape was designed, intersected by a sunken path in which the mosaic was installed. But it didn’t stop at design — more than 700 local residents and volunteers actively helped lay the more than 300,000 colored glass tiles, each measuring 2×2 cm.

The result is a monument rich in symbolism, beautifully uniting the region’s past and present. Glück Auf — a traditional miner’s greeting — refers to Limburg’s proud mining history and extends best wishes to everyone who contributed to its creation.

The project was commissioned by housing corporation Weller and the Municipality of Heerlen. Mothership acted as curator and was responsible for the participation process, project management, and production.
