Een Pot Met Goud Op Zuid
A Pot of Gold in the South is a monumental artwork by Arno Coenen, located on the Polderplein in Rotterdam’s Feijenoord district. The work combines colorful glass mosaics and ceramic tiles with high-resolution prints, creating a striking visual effect. Its dimensions are impressive: 1.5 meters high and 22 meters wide.
The artwork is deeply rooted in its local context. The square is home to the Fatih Mosque, a primary school, and a branch of Duimdrop, while the VMBO school OSG Nieuw-Zuid is just a short walk away. This environment served as the source of inspiration for Arno Coenen, known for his use of rich symbolism and visual storytelling. The title of the work, A Pot of Gold in the South, refers to a lightbox on Beijerlandselaan and conveys a hopeful, positive message: the idea that in Rotterdam South — often seen as an underappreciated part of the city — something valuable and beautiful can be found.
What makes this project special is the collaboration with the local community. The mosaic was hand-laid by residents of Polderplein and students from OSG Nieuw-Zuid. As a result, the artwork became not only a physical but also a social connection within the neighborhood. That sense of community is reflected in the mosaic itself, which symbolizes pride, togetherness, and the power of collaboration. Thanks to this collective effort, Polderplein gained a meaningful landmark that resonates both aesthetically and socially. Mothership guided the participation process, coordinated the project, and acted as producer and curator.
