Drierivieren Lichtfontein
At the busiest water junction in Europe — where the rivers Noord, Beneden-Merwede, and Oude Maas converge — lies the heart of the Drechtsteden: Dordrecht, Papendrecht, and Zwijndrecht. At this unique location, Mothership envisions an iconic light artwork that makes the region’s strength, dynamism, and interconnectedness both visible and tangible: the Drierivieren Lichtfontein.
Where the original plan envisioned three spectacular water jets reaching hundreds of meters high, technical and safety considerations led to a renewed approach. Instead of water, powerful beams of light now form the connection between three vantage points along the quays of the three cities. Together, these light fountains create an equilateral triangle across the water — a visually striking gesture that symbolizes the deep connection and shared identity between the cities.
By day, the three sites offer spaces for rest and panoramic views over the river. Informative displays show real-time ship movements through the AIS system, giving visitors a sense of the global importance of this busy waterway. At night, the spectacle comes alive: beams of light shoot across the water, reflecting on the river’s surface and creating a breathtaking visual display.
The light fountain is interactive: the number of visitors present determines the intensity and direction of the beams, which converge in an imaginary center — a symbol of cooperation between the cities. The technology behind the installation is locally developed, inspired by the rainbow technique used in the dredging industry, showcasing the region’s spirit of innovation and craftsmanship.
The Drierivieren Light Fountain is an ode to water, collaboration, and technological imagination — a landmark that informs by day and inspires by night, perfectly reflecting the ambition and identity of the Drechtsteden region.
