Doolhof Zonnepark Nijmegen
As part of a unique citizens’ initiative surrounding the Windpark Nijmegen-Betuwe, Mothership developed a special proposal for the adjacent solar field: a solar park that not only generates energy but also offers a public green experience. The result is an innovative design where technology and nature merge into a surprising whole — a labyrinth of berry bushes beneath a canopy of solar panels.
Instead of placing the panels flat on the ground, they are elevated to a height of 3.5 meters. This creates a sheltered, light-filled space beneath — like an open-air greenhouse — designed as an edible garden. Rows of berry bushes such as raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants, and blueberries form a living labyrinth where visitors are invited to wander, pick, and taste. The winding paths lead to an open core where sunlight streams in freely, creating a central meeting place surrounded by seating and edible greenery.
Mirrors on the underside of the solar panels enhance the experience by reflecting the greenery and fruit, creating a playful and almost magical effect. The contrast between the clean lines of the solar park and the organic shapes of the berry bushes reveals the underlying harmony between technology and nature.
The park is accessible to everyone — including people with disabilities — and is built using local, sustainable materials. Energy production remains optimal, while the landscape is enriched with biodiversity, flavor, experience, and symbolism. Doolhof Zonnepark Nijmegen is an ode to civic initiative and sustainable imagination — a place where solar energy and nature bear fruit together.
