Doetinchem VerbindT

Mothership, 2021

During the dark December evenings of 2021, De Bleek, the Mark Tennantplantsoen, the Catharinatoren, and the Catharinakerk in Doetinchem were illuminated in a fairy-tale glow. Each location represented one of the four natural elements: water (Oude IJssel), air (Catharinatoren), earth (Mark Tennantplantsoen), and fire (Catharinakerk). By lighting up these special sites, visitors were immersed in a natural experience right in the heart of the city.

The project featured an evening walk that began in the Mark Tennantplantsoen, where earth was symbolized by trees glowing with soft light. The route continued along the Oude IJssel, where the illuminated water reflected Doetinchem’s historic connection to the region. At the Catharinatoren, the elements fire (church) and air (tower) came into view. The church represented fire, as the warm heart of the city, while the tower, shining brightly above the skyline, served as a beacon of connection.

During Doetinchem VerbindT, the city was quite literally brought into the light, with the elements and the region connected through these impressive light installations. Within this project, Mothership was responsible for the concept development, design, execution, coordination, and project management.
