De Beverbrug

The Beverbrug is a striking lookout point in the nature reserve De Grote Zaag, located along the tidal river Nieuwe Maas between Dordrecht and Rotterdam. The structure was completed in 2018 near Krimpen aan de Lek and was designed by the artist collective Observatorium. The architecture is inspired by the beaver lodge and symbolizes the relationship between humans, climate change, and life within the dynamic river landscape of the estuary. As such, the Beverbrug functions not only as a viewpoint but also as an artwork and an icon of ecological awareness.

The project is part of the 2016 art initiative RiverArt, in which artists created new landmarks to make the river landscape more visible and accessible. Commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and supported by art producer Mothership, the Beverbrug was realized as a gateway to the renewed nature reserve. The structure offers views of the river, passing ships, nearby industry, and the Rotterdam skyline, and—together with the Spindotter Trail—invites visitors to explore the richness of the tidal landscape.

During the same period, De Groote Zaag underwent an extensive ecological restoration. Rijkswaterstaat improved the water quality by creating approximately 10 hectares of intertidal zones and nearly 4 kilometers of nature-friendly riverbanks. These interventions restore the natural ebb and flow of the tides, creating a richer habitat for plants and animals. As a result, the nature reserve has become more inviting not only for visitors but also for beavers, which are expected to return to the area in the near future.

The project was carried out in collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat, Stichting Het Zuid-Hollands Landschap, the Municipality of Krimpenerwaard, Stichting RiverArt R&D, and Vastgoed Bolnes. Mothership was responsible for production and project management. The Beverbrug is part of a growing network of Dutch lookout towers and stands as a symbol of how art, ecology, and recreation can come together in a single landscape experience.
