Damsels in Distress
During the Wereld van de Witte de With festival in 2007, themed Heroes, BLISS presented the interactive project Damsels in Distress. Visitors were invited to be photographed in staged scenes, immortalized as heroes rescuing one of the BLISS performers from a perilous situation. The work playfully explored classical hero roles and imagery, giving visitors a chance to experience their own moment of glory within a theatrical setting.
With a playful wink and plenty of pink, the BLISS performers enticed the audience to take part in these heroic photo sessions. Each setting combined kitsch, drama, and humor, giving visitors a chance to shine — if only for a moment — as the gallant rescuer.
Damsels in Distress was presented as part of the outdoor program of the annual festival, commissioned by Rotterdam Festivals. Mothership oversaw the participation process, managed the project, and served as curator.
