Connecting Worlds: Head in the Clouds

Eline Wieland, 2016

For the opening of Lagardère’s new high-end Fashion Gallery at Schiphol Airport, Mothership was commissioned to create an artwork that would bring both tranquility and surprise to a sleek retail environment. The space — defined by white and black marble, chrome, and wood — called for a striking centerpiece with a clear wow factor.

Mothership developed the concept, coordinated the project, and served as curator. A concrete column — once a disruptive element — was transformed into the focal point of the space. Using flexible LED panels, the column became a dynamic canvas that seamlessly transitions into a circular light ring (Ø 4 meters) in the ceiling.

The screen displays a 10-minute loop of moving images, designed by motion designer Eline Wieland. The work, titled Connecting Worlds – Head in the Clouds, features Dutch cloudscapes as the backdrop for a journey through nature, continents, and emotions. The title refers both to the act of travel and the dreamlike experience of shopping in transit.

The installation surprises, moves, and invites a moment of wonder in a world driven by haste. It offers a sensory pause for travelers on their way to distant destinations.
