CF Lounge
The CF Lounge at the Sophia Children’s Hospital in Rotterdam was created in 2006 to offer children with cystic fibrosis a more pleasant hospital experience. For their annual “big check-up” — during which they would normally have to move from one specialist to another — a single dedicated space was designed where children and their families could feel at home, and where caregivers would come to them.
Maurer United Architects, Hans van Bentem, and Geert Mul each made a significant artistic contribution to the project. Maurer United Architects designed an inviting space centered around a communal table that feels more like a cozy living room than a sterile hospital environment. Hans van Bentem added a fairytale-like climbing tree with a stained-glass canopy, creating a warm and magical atmosphere. Geert Mul designed an interactive application integrated into the table, giving each child access to a personal database where they could create their own digital homepage — filled with their preferences, memories, and messages to share with other children.
The CF Lounge was initiated by Prof. Dr. Harm Tiddens, and the concept was developed and executed by Mothership. Funding was made possible in part through a benefit concert by Golden Earring.
