Casino Enschede

Calvin Sprague, 2016

The casino in Enschede was housed in a closed, anonymous structure, barely noticeable to passersby and visitors of the adjacent parking garage and hospital. Mothership was commissioned to make the casino more visible and inviting.

Designer Calvin Sprague created a colorful and elegant visual language that tells the story of the casino — encounters, play, excitement, gastronomy, and live performances — interwoven with Twente symbolism. This visual identity comes to life on a 110-meter-long glass wall on level -2, between the parking garage and the moving walkway to the hospital. The wall transforms the space into a retro-style visual procession.

Above ground, the casino is now more clearly marked: figures from the procession flank both sides of the entrance on Koningsplein, while additional elements on the building’s façade make its purpose instantly recognizable.

Mothership was responsible for production, project management, and served as curator of the artwork. The design was realized in collaboration with Erna aan de Stegge from KunstWerkt.
