Calypso Falls
On October 11, 2018, Calypso Falls was unveiled at Mauritsplaats. On the rear side of the residential building Calypso, just around the corner from the Pauluskerk, a massive photograph was installed depicting a life-sized waterfall. Rotterdam-based artists Monique Benthin and Rick Messemaker based their work on an image of Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls, located in Skaftafell National Park. The photograph is applied in such a way that it appears as though the water is cascading directly from the wall. Two stones have been placed in front of the image, inviting passersby to take photos with this natural backdrop — right in the heart of the city.
Calypso Falls was initiated by the Calypso Falls working group, consisting of residents of Mauritsplaats, Rotterdamse Schouwburg, Ondernemingsvereniging Schouwburgplein, and Vereniging Verenigd Schouwburgplein. The project was made possible with support from BKOR and Rotterdam Make It Happen. Mothership developed the concept, guided the participation process, oversaw production, and coordinated the project.
