Flower Shower

Blossum, 2009, 2010

Blossum is the only airline in the world specializing in creating Flower Showers — and that’s meant quite literally. In collaboration with Mothership, the collective realized three poetic flower performances, during which hundreds of thousands of flowers were released from a helicopter over special locations.

In 2009, the start of construction for Nieuwegein’s new city center was celebrated with a Flower Shower. It was a colorful ode to the future, featuring flowers picked by local residents — only to return moments later as a joyful surprise, falling from the sky.

In 2010, a Flower Shower took place over De Velden in Rotterdam South — a neighborhood in transition. Once again, the flowers were picked by local residents — a symbolic and participatory gesture through which they quite literally contributed to their changing living environment.

That same summer in Delft, the demolition of the Poptahof apartment buildings was gracefully concluded. Blossum released a sea of flowers — a farewell and a gesture of gratitude to the buildings that had provided homes for so many years.

These three floral gestures demonstrate how a seemingly simple act can bring great emotional value to changing urban spaces. Mothership was responsible for the entire process — from community involvement to execution, project management, and curatorship.
