Floriade Expo Countdown Clock
In the heart of Almere — four meters below sea level and right in the middle of the Esplanade — Mothership created a striking art installation in the shape of a countdown clock. This clock marked the start of the final 100 days leading up to the opening of the world horticultural exhibition Floriade Expo 2022. On January 4, the countdown began toward April 14 — the day the park opened its gates to the public.
The countdown clock was not only a visual landmark, but also an open invitation to the city. Residents, clubs, and organizations were invited to claim a day of their own and take turns manually updating the clock in creative ways. In doing so, the public space became a place of connection, storytelling, and shared anticipation. Each day symbolized a new story — shared dreams, hopeful visions of the future, local news, or personal milestones.
Mothership developed the concept, guided the participation process, and was ultimately responsible for the design and production of the installation. The clock reflected — both literally and figuratively — the countdown to a special moment: a major international event embraced and carried by the city itself.
