4 = 1

Geert Mul, 2006

In 2006, the building 4 in 1 was opened in Breukelen, bringing together four different organizations: a daycare center, a library, a music school, and a secondary school. To strengthen the sense of connection between them, artist Geert Mul developed the interactive artwork 4 = 1.

The installation consists of four interactive units — one for each organization — connected through a shared network. By placing a hand on a sensor, the user’s handprint appears simultaneously on all screens throughout the building. At the same time, a dynamic collage of images is generated, tailored to the specific location where the installation is activated. The images are sourced daily from the internet and relate to themes such as children’s drawings, pop culture, musical notation, or alphabets.

Mothership was responsible for the full production and project management of this innovative installation. Thanks to this contribution, the artistic vision and technological complexity of the project came together seamlessly in a tangible, interactive experience. 4 = 1 demonstrates how art can foster connection and recognition within a shared space.
